Tour Overview

Visit two Chimú archeological sites and the coastal village of Huanchaco on this combo tour from Trujillo with a knowledgeable guide. Start at the Temple of the Dragon (also known as the Temple of the Rainbow), an adobe pyramid that features beautiful frieze murals. Then tour the biggest ancient city in South America, former Chimú capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Chan Chan. Explore its plazas and learn about its history, and then finish your tour in Huanchaco to see its famous reed fishing boats. Hotel transport is included.

Itinerary

Stop 1: 2 hours
On the way to the mud city we will make a stop at the Temple of the Dragon, an allegory of the Rainbow and engenderer of the desert dragons. We will then visit the Archaeological Complex of Chan Chan, with an area of 18 km2 approx., the Nik-An Palace, located in the south-western part of Chan Chan touring its ceremonial plazas, shrines, water reservoirs, barns, cemeteries, among others.
Stop 2:
The tour continues with a visit to the Huanchaco fishermen’s cove, famous for its totora reed boats called Totora Horses
Stop 3: 2 hours
Upon arrival in Moche valley, we will be welcomed by a traditional family descendant of the ancient Mochica Culture. We will then visit the awesome Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the center of power of the northern coast of Peru at the time of the Moche. We will be able to appreciate the outstanding group of frescoes in adobe in one of the walls of the Temple of the Moon, disclosed by the archeologists. To finish, we will be able to see some artifacts and tombs of the Mochica Culture in the Huacas de Moche site museum, which displays a range of utensils and pottery of high artistic level.
Stop 4: 1 hours
We will visit the city of Trujillo with beautiful mansions, imposing portals, balconies and well-preserved churches. We will then visit the Museum of Archaeology of the National University of Trujillo to get an insight of the pre-Columbian cultures of the region.
