The square is dominated by the magnificent, eighteenth-century Staircase of Trinità dei Monti, built in travertine by the architect Francesco De Sanctis. Located between the Aventine and the Palatine, the Circus Maximus in Rome was a stadium with a capacity for 300,000 spectators. The entire square is approximately 340 meters wide while the ellipse has an arc 240 meters wide. The ellipse is partially closed on both sides by colonnades made up of 284 columns and 88 pillars. On the balustrades at the top of each colonnade rest a total of 140 statues depicting Catholic saints.
Stop 10: 0.2 hours
Campo de' Fiori was built in the area in front of the Temple of Venus Victrix, perhaps the temple's stalls, and its name derives from the presence of a vast flowery meadow, as well as vegetable gardens, which adorned the square in the fifteenth century.
