Day 3: Day 3: Amman Hotel, Mt Nebo, Madaba, Kerak, Petra
Created around 560 AD, the map is located on the floor of the Church of St. George in Madaba, Jordan. It's the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, offering a detailed view of the region from Egypt to Lebanon, including Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and the Dead Sea. The map features not just geographical features but also biblical landmarks like cities, towns, and religious sites, making it a valuable resource for understanding early Christian beliefs and geography. Intricate Detail: The map is crafted from millions of tiny colored tesserae, creating a rich and vivid picture of the region. Unique Perspective: It offers a bird's-eye view of the Holy Land, unlike traditional maps that depict landmasses from the side. Historical Accuracy: Archaeological studies have shown that the map's depiction of cities and landmarks is surprisingly accurate for its time.
