Aarre

Hello there! My name is Aarre Safari and I am a Detroit born, Amsterdam resident of over 17 years with a recently finished Masters degree in Dutch History. My love for Dutch-land has long been established due to the high quality of life and the absolute breathtaking inner-city of Amsterdam. My personal interests include both teaching and learning about the Golden Age: the approximate 100 years in which the Dutch dominated global-trade. Additionally, I love introducing friends & guests to the surprising culture of local pubs and 17th century style cafes hidden around the old center. Come take a walk with an expat local and let's talk about Amsterdam: its history, architecture, culture and its future!

10 minutes prior to the start time I will be standing in the Middle of the Beursplein Square with a pink baseball cap. Beursplein is less than 5 minutes walking from both Central Station and Dam Square.

Description

This Golden Age Pub Tour is an introduction to Amsterdam's history and the decadent cultural life of the city during its dominion of world trade.

During this 2 hour history walking tour we will explore the 750 year-old UNESCO Heritage Site with stops at Zeedijk, Het Aepjen, Schreierstoren, Centraal Station, Red Light District, Newmarket, East India House & Dam Square. Additionally, we will visit a local brown cafe to show you how the locals in the 17th century unwound. Expect tons of fun & quirky historical facts to pique your interest!

For example: Did you know that at age 14 Rembrandt was fraudulently enrolled into Leiden University so that his parents could get wholesale discounts on beer & wine purchases? Or that English Dry Gin has its origin in a traditional Dutch liquor known as 'Juniper'?

For Practical Information: drink or food consumptions are not included in the tour but can be purchased by each participant on request. As an expert in local cafes I will help you taste and discover your new favorite refreshment. This tour is particularly suited to people interested in History and who also enjoy Beer, Wine or Spirits such as Gin or Whiskey. However, Non-Alcolholic options are always available on request and the historical information and anecdotes are the center of the tour's focus!

Come join my Guruwalk for a deep-dive into Amsterdamse culture at the height of the 17th century and to experience the uniqueness of the local tasting room!
