Description
The tour consists of a walk in the historic center of the city.
We begin from Independence Square, heading towards Lake Nicaragua, on Calzada Street and the Guadalupe Church, with its Gothic architecture. We will discuss how it was used during the National War against the filibuster William Walker from 1854 to 1857.
We will comment on a brief description of the Lake, the meaning of its name: Cocibolca and its relationship with the Chorotega indigenous people who descended from the Mayan Empire accompanied by their goddess Quezaltcoa or the Serpent Bird, also the visit of different pirates during the colonial era.
We will also see a panoramic view of the Islets of Granada with their respective description, while we walk along the boardwalk, where we will feel the breezes of the lake. We will then arrive at the monument of former President Emiliano Chamorro, twice president of the country and one of the greatest leaders on the American continent.
We then return to the church of San Francisco, next to the convent with the same name and its different uses throughout its history. We will talk about the architecture of what is the oldest church in all of Nicaragua, founded by the Franciscan friars Francisco Botila and Fray Bartolome de las Casas, who also defended the human rights of indigenous people.
On La Atravesada Avenue, to visit La Merced Tower and take photos around the city, ending the tour at Colon Park or Central Park.
