Negombo known as “little Rome “for centuries. Well known sea entry to the country and used as main harbor during Kotte era.
Negombo the name given by Portuguese after the Tamil word “Neercolombo”. Old fort, colonial buildings and churches still carrying Portuguese, Dutch and British legacies and Negombo was main fort during Kotte Era (1412 AD – 1597 AD) to export country’s main export – Cinnamon and other spices, Gemstone & pearls.Fishing community and roman catholism highlighted heritages to the city. Her majesty queen Elizabeth visited Negombo in 1954 A.D and tasted the Negombo sea food & enjoyed famous Negombo Easter Drama (Duwe Pasku) and also stayed same lodge her farther king George stayed in 1901 AD.
As Negombo Multi cultural city we start from the Sri Mutthu Mari Amman Temple on sea street. And we walk through the Local marker where the vendors sell Vegetable and fruits in stalls. King gorge drive named after the King Gorge visit to the city. Road goes parallelly with Indian sea where the angler’s activity area & dry fish processing center.
When we get enough dry fish smell we walk through the fish market (Lellama). And next to the prison (Before Dutch fort). We will pass the famous Kothlawala bridge here you can take nice picture over the fishing boats. Then we walk back again to opposite side and next stop will be St. Mary’s Cathedral in Negombo. Then travelers can get quick Sri Lankan spicy snacks or sweets with refreshments. Our Negombo born guide will show and explain every stop.
